Day Trips

Sneem (in Irish “An tSnaidhm”, meaning “the knot”), is known as The Knot on the Ring, as it forms part of the spectacular Ring of Kerry scenic route. Killarney, Kenmare, the Ring of Beara, Caherdaniel, The Gap of Dunloe and Carrauntoohil (Ireland’s highest mountain at 1039 metres) for walking and rock climbing, are within easy reach of Sneem.

The Ring of Kerry is a 175km (110 mile) scenic drive that follows the coastline around the Iveragh Peninsula. One of the most dramatic and scenic drives in Ireland, it affords views of a breathtaking array of sea-coast, lakes, rivers, blanket bog, forest and mountain terrain.

Killarney is famous for its beautiful lakes and forest park. A bustling tourist town, it offers many shops and restaurants as well as such attractions as Ross Castle, Muckross House & Gardens, and Torc Waterfall, Killarney National Park and The Lakes of Killarney.

Kenmare, known as ‘The Jewel on the Ring of Kerry,’ is well known for its excellent restaurants. Kenmare heritage town is rich in tradition and craft, the largest stone circle in the region is located here and it is also famous for its Kenmare needlepoint lace.

The Beara peninsula south of Kenmare also offers spectacular scenery. The Healy Pass cuts across the Caha Mountains with views over Bantry Bay and the beautiful, wild landscape of West Cork.

Caherdaniel boasts lively pubs and a blue flag beach at Derrynane, which offers water sports such as windsurfing and waterskiing. Derrynane House, its grounds now a National Historic Park, was the home of ‘The Liberator’, Daniel O’Connell. The world famous monastic site, Skellig Michael, and Valentia Island are also easy daytrips from Sneem.

Sneem Hotel can also organise guided day trips for fishing, cycling, hill walking, and archaeological tours.
